BANGKOK, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysians residing in Thailand need to instil the spirit of independence within themselves to ensure that the sense of freedom and love for the homeland continues to thrive, in line with this year's Independence Day theme, "Malaysia MADANI: Spirit of Independence."

Malaysia's Ambassador to Thailand Datuk Jojie Samuel stated that celebrating National Day abroad is a unique experience that is deeply touching and highly meaningful.

"I also hope that Malaysians in Thailand can instil the spirit of independence within each individual, ensuring that the sense of freedom and love for the homeland continues to live and grow, making this day one that prepares Malaysia for a more prosperous future," he told Bernama.

Samuel said that every year, the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok organises various activities to enhance and create a festive atmosphere for National Day celebrations among Malaysians abroad.

He said that various programmes and activities are organised in conjunction with the country’s National Day celebrations to ensure that Malaysians in Thailand appreciate the meaning of independence and rekindle their love for their country.

"All the programmes organised have had a very encouraging impact, where we can see unity, a sense of belonging, and harmony among Malaysians in Thailand."

He added that an estimated 1,500 Malaysians reside in Thailand.

Samuel noted that some of the activities scheduled include the 2024 National Day celebration with the Malaysian Diaspora on August 31, LED displays of the national flag and National Day messages at Siam Paragon, Baiyoke Tower II, and Central World on August 31, the 2024 National Day Reception on September 12, and the 2024 Merdeka Games, a sports event organised in collaboration with the Malaysia-Thailand Club throughout August and September.

"These activities are open to all Malaysians to strengthen the bond between Malaysians and the staff of the Malaysian Embassy," he said.

He mentioned that the Embassy has also been decorated with the national flag to reflect the Malaysian independence atmosphere for visitors and to foster patriotism among the staff.

In Malaysia, the 2024 National Day celebration on August 31 will be held in Putrajaya, with a parade starting from the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) to the Putra Mosque in Putrajaya.
