KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- The Afghan embassy in Kuala Lumpur hosted a reception on Thursday to mark the third anniversary of the withdrawal of the last contingent of United States (US) forces from Afghanistan on Aug 31, 2021.
The event, which is also celebrated as Afghanistan’s independence day, coincides with Malaysia’s National Day on the upcoming Saturday.
The celebration saw the participation of about 200 guests, including diplomats, officials from Wisma Putra (Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry), the Prime Minister’s Department, and members of the Afghan community residing in Malaysia.
Distinguished attendees included Mufti Noor Ahmad Noor, Director-General of the First Political Directorate at Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry; Naqibullah Ahmadi, Chargé d'Affaires of Afghanistan to Malaysia; Ahmad Azam Ab Rahman, Wisma Putra's Special Advisor to Afghanistan; and Perlis Mufti Datuk Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.
During their opening addresses, both Mufti Noor and Naqibullah highlighted the challenges Afghanistan had faced in the past and the promising prospects for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan moving forward.
They also noted the approaching half-century mark of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Afghanistan, expressing confidence in the continued strength and growth of these relations.
Mufti Noor emphasised Afghanistan's potential as a new trade route for Southeast Asian nations and highlighted opportunities for infrastructure development in the country.
Ahmad Azam reflected on Malaysia’s longstanding commitment to assisting Afghanistan, noting that he was appointed as a special advisor shortly after the US troop withdrawal. He has since visited Afghanistan four times to engage in various initiatives.
Meanwhile, Mohd Asri, familiar with the struggles of the Afghan people, remarked that the Afghan people’s fight now is to rebuild their country and prove to the world that as Muslims they can excel and do better than others.
