US FDA Mandates Photo ID For Tobacco Purchases Under Age 30

30/08/2024 12:00 PM

WASHINGTON, Aug 30 (Bernama-UPI) -- The United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Thursday that retailers must require photo identification from anyone under the age of 30 attempting to purchase tobacco products, including e-cigarettes starting Sept 30.

This new rule raises the current ID check requirement from under 27 to under 30, United Press International (UPI) reported.

The FDA stated that accurately determining customers' ages based on appearance alone is challenging for retailers. Additionally, beginning Sept 30, vending machines selling tobacco will be prohibited in facilities where individuals under 21 are allowed, raising the previous age limit from 18.

The American Lung Association praised the rule as "a critical step toward protecting young people from tobacco addiction."
