PHNOM PENH, Sept 1 (Bernama) -- Echoes of Malaysian patriotism on National Day resounded from Phnom Penh in Cambodia  to Vientiane in Laos, as Malaysians commemorated the momentous day at their respective embassies.

The Malaysian diaspora in both locations came together to celebrate over six decades of sovereignty and multiethnic unity and friendship.

In Phnom Penh, the Malaysian embassy continued with its tradition by hosting a special celebration that began with the flag-hoisting ceremony on Saturday morning.

The Malaysian ambassador to Cambodia, Shaharuddin Onn, while addressing the guests, said the National Day remains an important occasion for all Malaysians.

“We have plenty of celebrations and cultural festivals in Malaysia. However, there is one celebration that truly belongs to all Malaysians – the independence anniversary of Malaysia, which falls on Aug 31.

“The theme of this year’s Independence Day, “Malaysia Madani: The Spirit of Independence”, is an extremely befitting slogan.

“Although we may have our own interpretation of the theme, it essentially reminds us all to comprehend the meaning of independence and appreciate its significance as citizens of Malaysia.”

An estimated 5,000 Malaysians reside in Cambodia and about 500  Malaysian companies operate in diverse sectors, such as hospitality, food and beverage, IT (information technology), fintech and manufacturing.

“In my interactions and engagements with the Cambodian government, they hold in high regard and appreciate the contributions of investments, businesses and also Malaysians in general towards the development and growth of their country.

“Moreover, Malaysians were one of the earliest investors in Cambodia in the post-conflict era, despite the risks of uncertainty regarding the security and the direction of the country's development at that time.

“Nevertheless, Malaysians have confidence in the potential of this country. The presence of investors, businesses and Malaysians in Cambodia reflects their commitment and trust in this nation,” said Shaharuddin.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian community in neighbouring Laos also celebrated.

Malaysian ambassador to Laos, Edi Irwan Mahmud, said Malaysia Madani is not just a slogan but a vision to encourage us to build a country which is not just developed economically, but also rich in moral and ethical values.

“In this context, the spirit of independence reflects the freedom of the people of Malaysia from any negative elements along with the spirit of patriotism achieved by encompassing various thinking aspects and social and economic integration,” Edi said in his speech in the capital Vientiane.

“This slogan also reminds Malaysians of the importance of defending the essential principle of independence where they remain free from oppression and capable of determining their future in a just and harmonious environment.”
