BUENOS AIRES, Sept 2 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- The court hearings against former Bolivian president Jeanine Anez, accused of genocide, will begin on Tuesday, reported Sputnik.
Other defendants include former Interior Minister Arturo Murillo, former Defence Minister Luis Fernando Lopez Julio, and former Hydrocarbons Minister Victor Hugo Zamora.
Anez was arrested in March 2021 and has been in pre-trial detention ever since. Bolivian prosecutors are seeking 30 years in prison for her.
At the time, a special international commission was investigating the dispersal of protests that took place under Anez's rule in some Bolivian cities. The investigation became the basis for an act of genocide. The commission called the actions of law enforcement officials a massacre and confirmed that at least 37 people were killed and hundreds injured, most of them civilians who opposed Anez's government.
After the Bolivian opposition accused the government of mass violations in the October 2019 presidential election, then-president Evo Morales resigned and fled the country. Later, the entire Bolivian leadership also resigned. Power was then handed over to the opposition's vice president, Jeanine Anez. In 2020, Luis Arce, a socialist, won the presidential election.
