Kazakhstan To Hold Nationwide Referendum On Npp Construction On Oct 6

ASTANA, Sept 2 (Bernama-Kazinform) -- Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Monday announced that a nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant will be held on Oct 6, according to the country's national news agency, Kazinform.

"Given the growing global energy shortage, we desperately need reliable green energy sources. It is high time to focus on the development of nuclear energy.

“This power generation can meet the growing needs of the country. There are over 200 nuclear power plants in the 30 most developed and developing nations.

“We must consider the future, taking into account long-term national interests," the Head of State said when delivering his State of the Nation Address themed "Fair Kazakhstan: Law and Order, Economic Growth, and Public Optimism.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is set to sign the corresponding decree today.
