Uruguay's Star Striker SuÁrez Retires From International Football

03/09/2024 11:07 AM

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 3 (Bernama-dpa) -- Uruguay's all-time leading goal scorer Luis Suárez on Monday announced his retirement from international football, reported German news agency (dpa).

The 37-year-old announced that the Celeste's World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Friday would be his final game for the national team.

"I've given everything to the national team," Suárez said at a press conference in Montevideo, his voice choked with tears. "But I'm 37 years old and the next World Cup is still a long way off."

Suárez is the Uruguayan national team's all-time leading scorer, with 69 goals in 142 games. He is regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation.

However, he has also repeatedly attracted attention for his unsportsmanlike behaviour over the course of his career.

The Uruguayan was banned for nine international matches for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup.

Suárez has played top teams including Ajax, Liverpool and Barcelona. He is currently under contract with Inter Miami, where he plays alongside Argentinian star striker Lionel Messi.
