Severe Storm Hits Rome, Month's Worth Of Rain Falls In Just One Hour

04/09/2024 11:03 AM

ROME, Sept 4 (Bernama-dpa) -- A brief but severe summer storm hit the Italian capital Rome on Tuesday, causing flooding across parts of the city, reported German news agency (dpa).

The storm unleashed 60 litres of rain per square metre in under an hour, which is equivalent to the typical rainfall for an entire autumn month, news agency ANSA reported, citing local authorities in Rome.

The heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, led to the flooding of some underpasses.

ANSA cited the capital's environmental councillor, Sabrina Alfonsi, as saying the rainfall of this magnitude was completely unexpected and had not been predicted by any weather forecast.

Further thunderstorms with temperatures of 32°C are forecast for Rome in the coming days.
