Foreign Ministry Closely Monitoring Tropical Storm Yagi In Southern China

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry – through its Consulate Generals in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China – is closely monitoring the development of Tropical Storm Yagi, which is expected to hit parts of southern China, including Hainan and Guangdong. 

In a statement on Thursday, the ministry said that as of 3 pm local time on Sept 5, the Super Typhoon Yagi was located approximately 350 km south-southeast of Hong Kong. 

“It is forecast to move west-northwest across the northern part of the South China Sea.

“Thus far, no Malaysians have been reported to be involved or affected by the typhoon,” the statement read. 

The Foreign Ministry urged Malaysians in the affected areas to stay vigilant and follow the latest updates and guidance provided by the local authorities. 

It said those who have not yet registered and updated their whereabouts and details are encouraged to do so immediately at https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my.

It noted that Malaysians in need of consular assistance, can reach out to the Consulate General of Malaysia in Hong Kong or Guangzhou.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government is fully prepared to respond to Typhoon Yagi, as the Hong Kong Observatory announced on Thursday that it would issue Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 at around 6:20 p.m. local time, Xinhua reported.

According to the news report, the Hong Kong Observatory stated in a press release that local winds will progressively strengthen under the influence of Typhoon Yagi, a mature storm. Based on the current forecast, Yagi will maintain super typhoon intensity and pass approximately 300 km southwest of Hong Kong on Friday morning.
