SINGAPORE, Sept 8 (Bernama) -- The Singapore government will contribute US$100,000 (US$1=RM4.30) as seed money to support the Singapore Red Cross’ (SRC) public fundraising efforts for the severe floods affecting Bangladesh’s eastern districts.

The republic’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement that the contribution will support humanitarian relief efforts and address the immediate needs of affected communities due to the natural disaster.

The SRC on Sept 5 launched a public fundraising appeal until Oct 31 to further support the recovery efforts in Bangladesh.

It has committed US$50,000 to support emergency operations, providing essential aid and relief to affected communities through the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS).

According to SRC, more than 5.8 million people have been affected in 492 municipalities and at least 502,501 people taking refuge in 3,403 evacuation centres due to heavy rainfall since late August.

At least 52 people have died and over 1.2 million families are trapped in floodwaters across 11 districts of eastern Bangladesh with Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Cumilla and Feni as the most affected, SRC said in a statement, citing media and humanitarian partners.
