Arab Foreign Ministers Urge International Community To Enforce ICJ Advisory Opinion

11/09/2024 01:37 PM

CAIRO, Sept 11 (Bernama-SPA) -- The Arab foreign ministers have urged the international community to enforce the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on July 19, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

This opinion confirmed the illegality of Israel's ongoing presence in the occupied Palestinian territory and called for Israel to end its illegal presence as soon as possible and to immediately cease all settlement activities.

At the conclusion of the 162nd Ministerial Meeting of the Arab League Council, chaired by Yemen, the ministers emphasised that all states and international organisations are obligated not to recognise the legitimacy of the situation resulting from Israel's continued and illegal occupation of the Palestinian territory.

They have called on the United Nations, particularly the General Assembly and the Security Council, to consider additional measures necessary to put an end to Israel's illegal occupation as soon as possible.

The Arab foreign ministers have also urged the International Court of Justice to expedite its judgment on the case brought by South Africa against Israel, accusing it of failing to fulfill its obligations under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

This determination is based on the Court's finding that the Palestinian people are protected under the Convention and Israel's non-compliance with the provisional measures ordered by the Court.

Furthermore, the ministers emphasised that Israel's expulsion of the Palestinian people from their land constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law, amounts to a declaration of war and aggression against Arab national security, undermines peace prospects, and exacerbates the conflict in the region.

The Arab foreign ministers also tasked the Arab group in New York with taking steps to suspend Israel's participation in the United Nations General Assembly due to its non-compliance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, its threat to international peace and security, and its failure to fulfill its obligations that were a condition for its admission to the United Nations.

The ministers also affirmed their rejection of the claims made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to justify his refusal to withdraw from the Philadelphi corridor, considering these claims to be aimed at obstructing efforts to cease fire and exchange prisoners and hostages undertaken by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States.

They called for Israel's complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, including the Philadelphi corridor and the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing. They stressed the need to operate the Rafah crossing in accordance with the applicable rules and to remove all obstacles to safe, adequate, and rapid humanitarian access through the crossing.

Additionally, the Arab foreign ministers announced their adoption and support for the State of Palestine's move to obtain full membership in the United Nations.

They called on the Security Council to accept this membership based on the decision of the United Nations General Assembly, which recognised the right and eligibility of the State of Palestine for full membership in the United Nations.
