INDONESIA

 

1.PUAN MAHARANI REELECTED AS HOUSE SPEAKER -- THE JAKARTA POST

Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Puan Maharani, the first woman to lead the House of Representatives, reclaimed the legislative body's top seat on Tuesday, continuing her reign in a legislature dominated by parties aligned with president-elect Prabowo Subianto. The PDI-P, the largest party by representation in the House, had nominated Puan as the only candidate speaker.

 

2.BALI’S SACRED MOUNT AGUNG CLOSED FOR TOURIST HIKES FOR 2 MONTHS -- THE BALI SUN

Bali’s highest peak, the sacred Mount Agung, will be closed to the public for the next two months. Tourists, visitors, and even most local residents will be banned from stepping foot on the mountain as the community conducts a series of ceremonies that are only conducted every ten years.

1. HUN MANET CONGRATULATES JAPAN’S NEW PM -- FRESH NEWS

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet congratulated Japan's new Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and vowed to continue the strong bilateral relations. He said Cambodia will work closely with the new premier to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed in 2023. 

 

2. CAMBODIAN JOURNALIST SENT TO PRE-TRIAL DETENTION -- KIRIPOST

A local journalist was sent to pre-trial detention for posting content on social media last month that could harm social security. He was alleged to have posted images of quarry operations which authorities refuted. The 36-year-old journalist was also detained in 2022.

 

 

MYANMAR

 

1. MYANMAR’S NATIONWIDE POPULATION CENSUS BEGINS --THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

Myanmar started a 15-day nationwide census on population and households to collect the latest data starting from 1 to 15 October. The data will be used to formulate suitable socio-economic and management policies. The last census was done in 2014.

 

 

2. EIGHT NEW INVESTMENTS WORTH US$9 MILLION APPROVED -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

The government approved eight fresh investments in oil and natural gas, industrial, transport and communication, and services sectors, and raised the capital of the ongoing investment activities. The approved investments worth US$9.3 million can create 1,972 jobs.

1. ASIAN MINISTERS STRESS ON QUALITY EDUCATION -- VIENTIANE NEWS

During the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation meeting in Vientiane, participants charted guidelines and recommendations for developing quality education among member countries. Regional collaboration post-COVID-19 and the need for digital transformation in education were major highlights.

 

2. GERMANY PLEDGES 41 MILLION EUROS AID TO LAOS -- VIENTIANE NEWS

Germany pledges to offer 41 million euros to support poverty alleviation projects and promote economic development in Laos. The aid is under the Lao-German cooperation for reducing poverty, developing vocational skills, job creation, and promoting sustainable use of natural resources.
