INDONESIA

 

1.JAKARTA CANDIDATES BATTLE FOR BETAWI VOTE -- THE JAKARTA POST

Jakarta governor candidate Ridwan Kamil is mounting a challenge to his biggest rival in the race in appealing to the Betawi people, Jakarta’s native ethnic group, through campaign promises and discussions geared toward cultural preservation and giving the community more widespread recognition.

 

2.BALI’S ATTORNEY GENERAL LAUNCHES ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION INVESTIGATION IN ULUWATU -- THE BALI SUN

The Uluwatu Sea Wall Project is one of the most contentious development initiatives in Bali right now. Three-quarters of a huge section of the Uluwatu cliffside, close to Uluwatu Temple, has been excavated to make way for what the public initially understood to be cliff stabilisation work.

 

CAMBODIA

 

1. INVESTMENTS WORTH RM1.9 BILLION IN SEPTEMBER -- AGENCE KAMPUCHEA PRESSE

Cambodia approved 28 new investment projects worth US$443 million in September this year that could generate about 25,000 new jobs. The new projects are mostly in the manufacturing sector,  garment, furniture, packaging and household goods. China tops the foreign investors’ list.

 

2. CONSERVATION HELPS TO RISE IN DOLPHINS AND DUGONGS -- THE PHNOM PENH POST

A fishing community’s conservation efforts in Kampot province are helping to increase the populations of dolphins and dugongs. Kampot is home to about 46 humpback dolphins and nearly 30 Irrawaddy dolphins that are found near fishing communities in the province. 

 

LAOS 

 

1. ASEAN PROMOTED AS PRIME INVESTMENT REGION -- VIENTIANE TIMES

The ASEAN Investment Forum 2024 launched the ASEAN Regional Investment Action Plan 2025-2030 - a blueprint to position the region as an attractive destination for investors. The forum discussed opportunities and challenges in ASEAN, infrastructure development, digital transformation and green economy investments.

 

2. VIENTIANE HOSTS FIRST LAOS LOGISTICS FAIR -- VIENTIANE TIMES

The Laos Logistics Fair kicked off in Vientiane showcasing development projects such as the Vientiane Logistics Park and the Thanaleng Dry Port that connect ASEAN markets to China. The fair runs concurrently with the ASEAN Summit from October 8-11.

 

MYANMAR

 

1. MOVE TO BUILD LOCOMOTIVES AND CARRIAGES -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR 

The government announced that diesel-electric multiple unit and carriages will be built locally as part of  its efforts to revitalise the nation’s rail transport system. The speed of trains will be raised to 80 kilometres per hour and for freight trains to 60 kilometres per hour.

 

2. TRADERS TOLD TO MAINTAIN RICE PRICES -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR 

The Consumer Affairs Department instructed traders to sell rice at reasonable market prices and those caught flouting the law could face legal action. Retailers are not allowed to make profits of more than eight per cent of the set market prices.
