INDONESIA

 

1.RENEWABLES LACKING AT CLOSE OF JOKOWI ERA -- THE JAKARTA POST

Indonesia has seen little progress in its energy transition over the past decade as President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has straddled two diverging boats, trying to increase power generation from renewable sources but failing to phase out coal.

 

2.FIRE ERUPTS AT FREEPORT INDONESIA'S SMELTER, NO CASUALTIES REPORTED -- JAKARTA GLOBE

A fire broke out at Freeport Indonesia's smelter factory in the Java Integrated Industrial Port and Estate (JIIPE) Special Economic Zone (KEK) in Gresik, East Java, accompanied by reports of two loud explosions.

 

 

CAMBODIA

 

1. CAMBODIA MARKS 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF WTO ACCESSION - - AGENCE KAMPUCHEA  PRESSE 

Cambodia marked the 20th anniversary of its accession to the World Trade Organisation yesterday. It was the 148 member of the global trade body. The membership allowed Cambodia to  access international markets that helped to grow its economy. 

 

2. FREE VACCINATION FOR DOGS TO CURB RABIES -- THE PHNOM PENH POST

The General Department of Animal Health and Production will launch a mass dog vaccination drive soon to prevent the spread of rabies. Annually, about 600,000 people are bitten by dogs in the country. The project will include Phnom Penh and two neighbouring provinces. 

 

 

MYANMAR

 

1. MYANMAR-INDIA INK DEVELOPMENT PACT - - THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

 Myanmar and India signed five memorandum of understanding agreements under the Quick Impact Projects in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday. India will provide about RM1 million to improve rice mills and construct a one-storey training school for girls in Mandalay Region.

 

2. MYANMAR ENCOURAGES COTTON CULTIVATION -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation is targeting to push cotton cultivation to 600,000 acres this year and 82 per cent of the areas have been planted as of September. The ministry is providing seeds and technical assistance to farmers to achieve the target. 

 

 

VIETNAM

 

1. VIETNAM AIMS EIGHT PER CENT ECONOMIC GROWTH - - VIETNAMPLUS

The Ministry of Planning and Investment is forecasting a 7.6 to eight per cent economic growth in the fourth quarter of this year despite Typhoon Yagi’s disruption of the country's economic activities. The manufacturing and processing sectors are expected to drive growth. 

 

2. SOUTH KOREAN HYOSUNG GROUP TO INVEST RM17 BILLION -- VIETNAM NEWS 

South Korean conglomerate Hyosung Group will inject another RM17 billion into the Vietnamese economy after investing a similar amount that created over 10,000 jobs in the country before. It is the  third largest Korean investor in Vietnam.

 

THAILAND

 

1. MUTUAL BENEFITS KEY TO HIGH-SPEED RAIL CONTRACT AMENDMENT -- THE NATION 

The Eastern Economic Corridor Policy Committee (EECP) has approved a series of principles to amend the contract for the high-speed rail project connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and UTapao airports.

 

2. BRIBERY CLAIMS TO BE PROBED -- BANGKOK POST

An investigation will be launched into a claim that a House committee member demanded money from an executive of The iCon Group, the direct sales company at the centre of an alleged public fraud scam, House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha said.

1. ALLIANZ TO CONSIDER REVISING INCOME OFFER AFTER CURRENT DEAL BLOCKED BY SINGAPORE GOVT -- THE SRAITS TIMES

German insurer Allianz said late on Oct 14 that it will consider revisions to the proposed transaction structure to acquire a majority stake in Singapore’s Income Insurance.

 

2. SINGAPORE TO NOMINATE RENA LEE FOR ELECTION AS JUDGE OF THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE -- CNA

Singapore will nominate its Ambassador for International Law Rena Lee for election as a judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2026.
