Envoy Jojie Samuel Bids Farewell After 32 Years Of Distinguished Diplomatic Service

BANGKOK, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- After 32 years of unwavering dedication to Malaysia’s diplomatic service, Datuk Jojie Samuel has bid an emotional farewell, as his tour of duty in Thailand came to a close.

The Malaysia's ambassador to Thailand began his illustrious career with the Foreign Ministry in December 1992 as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer (PTD).

He was among the first batch of officers to undergo a four-month diplomatic course at the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) then.

An Illustrious Journey

Reflecting on his journey as a career diplomat, Samuel shared that his over three decades in service had allowed him the privilege of representing Malaysia in numerous countries, including Canada, Iraq, Türkiye, Austria, Cuba and Thailand.

“My first assignment abroad was in Canada in 1995, where I was posted to the Malaysian High Commission in Ottawa.

“It was a culture shock at first, especially during the harsh winter, but as people say, your first mission is like your first love – it’s always unforgettable,” he said during an exclusive interview with Bernama.

Samuel also recounted the challenges he faced during his career, including his time in Bagdad, during the bombing of Iraq in 1998, which he described as one of the most demanding yet fascinating postings.

"Witnessing bombing incidents firsthand was a shocking experience, but it taught me the resilience, importance of diplomacy in conflict zones and to treasure our life," he said.

Cherish Moments In Thailand

Hailing from Johor Bahru, Samuel’s journey in Bangkok began in January 2018. It was initially intended to be a three-year posting. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic hit, his tenure as the head of mission was extended, making it his longest posting abroad – just one month short of seven years.

“Bangkok will always hold a special place in my heart, not only because it is my longest assignment but also because of the warmth and kindness of the Thai people. Their resilience and generosity have left a lasting impression on me,” he said.

Samuel recalled some of the most significant moments of his tenure in Thailand, including the coronation of His Majesty King Rama X in 2019.

He also cherished the privilege of delivering a congratulatory speech on behalf of the Diplomatic Corps during the Sixth Cycle Birthday Celebrations of His Majesty the King in July this year.

“I am deeply honoured to have represented Malaysia and to have witnessed such historic events,” he added.

The Next Chapter Ahead

When asked about his plans post-retirement, Samuel shared his excitement for a new chapter filled with leisure and meaningful pursuits that included more family time, playing golf, singing and travelling.

“Of course, I will spend quality time with my family. But with my professional and personal experience, I am also ready to offer guidance to governments, agencies, or businesses interested in Malaysia-Thailand or even ASEAN relations,” he said.

Samuel expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Malaysian government, the Foreign Ministry, and the Royal Thai Government for their trust and cooperation throughout his tenure.

“I have strived to uphold Malaysia’s image and promote our interests in Thailand. I extend my sincere thanks to the Malaysian prime minister, the Thai government, and everyone whose dedication and support have been instrumental in my journey here,” he said.

Samuel also shared his hope for continued collaboration between Malaysia and Thailand.

“I wish for Malaysia and Thailand’s diplomatic relations to grow even stronger, fostering peace, stability, and shared prosperity for the benefit of the entire region.” 

Nov 29 marked his last day of service in Thailand. He and his wife, Datin Catherina Cherian Samuel, are scheduled to return to Malaysia this evening.
