Thailand Extradites She Zhijiang To China In 12.6-trillion-baht Gambling Scandal

BANGKOK, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- Thailand has extradited Chinese-Cambodian businessman She Zhijiang to China, where he faces charges of operating more than 200 illegal online casino websites valued at an estimated 12.6 trillion baht (100 baht = RM12.74).

She, who had been detained in Thailand since 2022 following his arrest by Thai police at China’s request via Interpol, was handed over to Chinese authorities on Wednesday after the Appeal Court upheld an earlier ruling approving his extradition.

Chinese authorities allege that She orchestrated extensive transnational online gambling networks and money-laundering operations. He arrived at a Bangkok airport on Wednesday under heavy escort by Thai security officials.

In a statement, the Royal Thai Police said the extradition operation was directed by National Police Chief Pol Gen Kittirat Panpetch and Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Thana Chuawong.

"The transfer was carried out under the 1993 Extradition Treaty between the Kingdom of Thailand and the People’s Republic of China," Thai Police said on Wednesday.

Thai Police said a special commando unit from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) escorted She from Bangkok Remand Prison to a detention facility at Suvarnabhumi Police Station, where he was handed over to Chinese law enforcement officers.

The extradition followed Monday’s Appeal Court ruling, which confirmed the lower court’s decision ordering She’s transfer to China within 90 days of the verdict becoming final.

According to Chinese authorities, She was allegedly behind the establishment and management of more than 239 online casino websites, generating a total cash flow exceeding 2.77 trillion yuan (approximately 12.6 trillion baht).

He was also reportedly involved in the development of the Asia Pacific New City project in the Shwe Kokko Special Economic Zone in Myanmar, which included two casino complexes allegedly targeting Chinese gamblers.
