Thai Embassy KL To Conduct Early Voting For GE, Referendum This Weekend

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- Overseas voting for Thailand’s general election and constitutional referendum will take place in Malaysia this weekend, with the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur gearing up to facilitate early voting for eligible Thai nationals.

Polling will take place simultaneously on Jan 24 and 25 from 9 am to 6 pm.

The overseas voting exercise comes ahead of the Kingdom's general election on Feb 8.

An official from the embassy said a total of 3,957 Thai nationals across Malaysia have registered to vote in the general election, ranking Malaysia 10th globally for registered Thai overseas voters.

Meanwhile, 2,814 voters have registered for the referendum, placing Malaysia ninth worldwide.

Besides casting their ballots physically at the embassy in Jalan Ampang, the mission will also deploy Mobile Voting Units to Johor, Sarawak and Sabah to ensure accessibility for Thai citizens residing in those states, the official said.

Eligible voters elsewhere in the country will also cast their ballots at the Royal Thai Consulate Generals in Penang and Kota Bharu, the official told Bernama. 

“Voters are also advised to bring their identification documents and adhere to the stipulated voting hours at their respective designated locations,” the official said.

According to the Election Commission of Thailand, 139,535 Thai nationals worldwide have registered as overseas voters for the general election and 95,666 for the referendum.

The 2026 election follows the dissolution of the House of Representatives late last year, while the referendum seeks to assess public consensus on the drafting of a new constitution.

This will be Thailand's third constitutional referendum, after the first in 2007 and the second in 2016.
