MILAN, Feb 20 (dpa) -- Alysa Liu made the crowd at the Milano Ice Skating Arena roar as she capped her comeback with women's figure skating gold on Thursday at the Milan/Cortina Winter Olympics, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

The United States (US)'s superstar scored 150.20 points in the free skating with a feel-good performance to the sound of Donna Summer's "MacArthur Park Suite."

She turned the arena into a disco party, with the crowd, including team-mate and top star Ilia Malinin, on their feet and clapping along.

After placing third in the short programme, she scored a total of 226.79 points to beat three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto of Japan by 1.89 points.

Sakamoto couldn't hold back the tears after her performance, which was her final routine before retirement.

Bronze also went to Japan with Ami Nakai, who had topped the short programme the day before.

Liu, who had originally retired in 2022, made her comeback in the 2024-25 season and will also go back home with team gold.

The women's competition was the last figure skating event at the Games.

An exhibition gala is scheduled for Saturday with artistic performances from the stars of the Games.
