Tradition Of Firing Cannon Marks Ramadan And Eid In Saudi Arabia

28/02/2026 02:45 PM

RIYADH, Feb 28 (Bernama-SPA) -- The sound of the cannon, with blank shots fired to be heard widely throughout the cities, is associated with Ramadan and the two Eid holidays, traditionally announcing the start of the holy month, the times of iftar, sahur, imsak and the arrival of Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the tradition is to announce the beginning of Ramadan with the cannon firing seven blank shots, followed daily by one shot at iftar (breaking the fast), one at sahur (pre-dawn meal) and two at imsak (the start of the fast).

Additional shots are fired to celebrate the arrival of Eid Al-Fitr, following the timing and rituals of the holy month.

This tradition is deeply rooted in the collective memory of the people and predates the spread of modern methods. It continues to be observed in several regions of the Kingdom, including Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, Tabuk and Northern Borders.

The cannon is loaded with blank ammunition throughout the month and placed in elevated locations. To ensure the sound reaches the widest possible area, security personnel oversee its setup, maintenance and firing at scheduled times, guaranteeing smooth operation and site safety.
