China Legislature Approves Key Reports, Adopt Three Laws

BEIJING, March 12 (Bernama) -- China’s national legislature on Thursday approved several key government reports and adopted three new laws at the closing meeting of the fourth session of the 14th National People’s Congress.

Lawmakers passed the Law on National Development Planning, the Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, and the Ecological Environment Code.

The session also endorsed the government work report as well as reports by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate.

Delegates further endorsed reports on the implementation of the 2025 national economic and social development plan and the draft plan for 2026, along with reports on central and local budgets for 2025 and 2026.

The outline of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development (2026–2030) was also approved.

Speaking at the closing meeting, president of the Standing Committee of the National People Congress (NPC) Zhao Leji said the session had achieved broad consensus underscoring the importance of formulating and implementing Five-Year Plans as a key feature of governance under China’s socialist system.

“It was a conference that rallied strength, emphasised solid work, and united all in striving forward. It embodies the high degree of unity between the CPC (Communist Party of China) propositions and the will of the people,” he said. 

The developments came as China concluded its annual Two Sessions, which comprised the meetings of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the National People’s Congress, held here from March 4 to March 12. 

The gatherings bring together nearly 5,000 political advisers and lawmakers to review government work, deliberate on national development priorities manifested in the country's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) and approve key policies and legislation for the years ahead.
