ISTANBUL, April 13 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The Australian government on Monday named the first female army chief in the 125-year history of the country's military, according to an official statement, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

The Chief of Joint Capabilities, Lt. Gen. Susan Coyle, will be appointed as the new army chief after the retirement of incumbent army chief Lt. Gen. Simon Stuart in July, according to a statement from the office of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

“From July, we will have the first-ever female Chief of Army in the Australian Army’s 125-year history," he said.

Enlisting as a soldier in the Army Reserves in 1987, Coyle has worked at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels and in command roles, including Head of Information Warfare; Commander, Forces Command; Commander, Joint Task Force 633; Commander, 6th Brigade; Commander, Task Group Afghanistan; and Commanding Officer, 17th Signal Regiment.

The navy chief Vice Adm. Mark Hammond has been named as the country's new Chief of the Defence Force.

Including reservists and civilians, the strength of the Australian Defence Forces reached 61,189 personnel last July, according to the Australian Defence Ministry.
