KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 (Bernama) -- The Embassy of Malaysia in Baghdad hosted a mock cheque handover ceremony for Qaiwan International University (QIU), underscoring Malaysia’s continued commitment to supporting Iraq’s human capital development and strengthening cooperation in the education sector.
In a statement Sunday, Chargé d’Affaires Neermal Shunmugam said Malaysia remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to Iraq’s long-term development, particularly in sectors such as education, healthcare and capacity building.
He also emphasised that education continues to play an important role in strengthening people-to-people ties and creating opportunities for future cooperation between institutions in both countries.
The project is expected to benefit students in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq by supporting academic development and strengthening institutional linkages between Malaysian and Iraqi stakeholders.
The collaboration with QIU is also expected to create opportunities for cooperation in training, research, academic exchanges and institutional development.
QIU, one of the growing private higher education institutions in the Kurdistan Region, has been actively expanding its international engagement and academic partnerships in recent years.
In October 2025, Malaysia completed the implementation of a Malaysian-funded Primary Healthcare Centre in Anbar Province aimed at improving access to essential healthcare services for local communities.
The current initiative complements ongoing Malaysian efforts to support Iraqi communities through education, knowledge-sharing and institutional cooperation.
Malaysia also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Iraq and pursuing initiatives that contribute to the well-being and resilience of the Iraqi people.
The ceremony, which was officiated by Shunmugam and Vice Chairman of QIU Prof Dr Harris Raad, was attended by representatives from the university and officials of the Malaysian Embassy.
