Malaysia's AI Roadmap 2021-2025 Achieves 63 Pct Completion Milestone As Of 3Q 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The implementation of initiatives outlined in the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Roadmap 2021-2025 has reached 63 per cent completion as of the third quarter (3Q) of 2024.

Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal said the plan is overseen by the National Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence Committee (NBAIC) and encompasses more than 24 action plans.

"Under the roadmap, AI is expected to generate a 30 per cent increase in gross domestic product (GDP) estimates.

"However, it is challenging to determine AI’s specific contribution, as the technology is applied across various sectors and industries," he told the Dewan Rakyat during a question-and-answer session on Thursday.

Mohammad Yusof was responding to a query from Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) regarding the implementation status of the AI roadmap.

As an alternative measure of progress, Mohammad Yusof said the Government AI Readiness Index, published by Oxford Insights, can assess the country’s readiness for AI adoption.

According to the index, Malaysia improved its ranking from 29th in 2022 to 23rd in 2023.

"This increase reflects the gradual implementation of AI-related initiatives," he added.
