Kaspersky Warns Telegram Users About Fake Telegram Premium Offers
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- Kaspersky has warned that fake Telegram Premium offers have been spreading globally, aiming to steal account credentials or compromise devices.
In a statement, Kaspersky said the scam would target users with phishing scams and malware (malicious software) disguised as alternative app (application) versions.
“The scams capitalise on Telegram Premium’s popularity and gifting feature, making it crucial for users to remain vigilant,” it said.
It said one of the tricks begins when a user receives a message -- “You’ve been sent a gift - a Telegram Premium subscription” -- from someone in their contact list whose account may have been hacked.
If victims scan the code or enter their credentials, their account is immediately compromised, giving scammers access to their login details, passwords, and authentication codes.
Besides, attackers may also use other methods to send phishing links via email, or cybercriminals may send victims an invitation to download a zip archive that claims to contain a version of the messenger service with a “Premium” subscription.
“Make sure your Telegram security and privacy settings are up to date, and your device has a robust security solution,” said Kaspersky security expert Olga Svistunova.
Telegram Premium is a subscription that offers exclusive features, such as faster download speeds, voice-to-text conversion, premium stickers, an ad-free (without advertisements) experience, and more.
Kaspersky also advises Telegram users to check its guide, double-check links, verify links from contacts, purchase subscriptions through official channels, and enable two-factor authentication.
