PETRA Committed To Exploring Methods To Reduce Carbon Emissions In Electricity Generation
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) is committed to ensuring that Malaysia continues to explore methods to reduce carbon emissions in electricity generation.
Its minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this includes the potential implementation of “mothballing” and “co-firing” and exploring cleaner and renewable energy sources for electricity generation.
He said the government would ensure that the country’s electricity resources could be supplied adequately, sustainably, and at affordable prices to consumers.
Fadillah said that Malaysia's electricity generation sector currently relies on two main fossil fuel sources, namely gas and coal, to meet baseload demand, with the energy mix consisting of 55 per cent coal and 32 per cent gas.
“The government still maintains coal as the main source of electricity generation because the cost of producing electricity from coal is still the cheapest, and this is important to ensure prices are affordable to consumers,” he said when winding up the debate on the Motion to Thanks for the Royal Address for the ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today.
In line with the energy transition, Fadillah said the electricity sector still needs a high supply of gas to generate electricity, namely as a transition fuel, especially with the introduction of gas-based power plants to replace coal-fired power plants that are about to be retired.
