First LNG Shipment From Canada In July - Petronas

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has announced that its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment from its joint venture, LNG Canada, is now expected to occur in July 2025.

This marks a delay from the initial plan, which aimed for a shipment by the end of 2024.

Petronas executive vice president and chief executive officer of gas and maritime Datuk Adif Zulkifli said the delay was mainly due to the harsh weather conditions in Canada.

"The relative temperature is harsh and it is such a cold winter. The plant needs to be insulated and it is a labour-intensive process,"  he told reporters after the announcement of Petronas’s financial performance for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024 (FY2024) here today.

Petronas' 25 per cent-owned associate LNG Canada was supposed to ship its first LNG cargo before end-2024.

Adif also pointed out labour issues to help with the operations but the national oil firm was catching up on the process and was able to bring in enough manpower since January.

"We are ramping up at the moment," he said.

Addressing the potential impact of the United States tariff on Petronas' operations in Canada, president/group chief executive officer Tengku Tan Sri Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said the national oil firm upholds what Malaysia represents.

"We are an open trading nation. We trade fairly and equitably. We abide by the laws of either side of any jurisdiction.

“In the LNG market, where there is a well-established pricing mechanism, we will follow it," he said, adding that LNG Canada is targeted to serve Far East markets.
