MIA Calls On Accountants To Lead Cross-Sector Collaboration For Sustainable Future

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) encourages accountants to take the lead in fostering  collaboration across sectors and borders in pursuit of a sustainable and inclusive future.

Its president Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Zabidi Ahmad said to remain relevant in the future, accountancy professionals must continue upskilling in key emerging areas such as environmental, social, and governance issues, sustainability, and digital transformation.

“We must be adaptable, resilient, and ready to deliver both financial and non-financial insights to support organisations in navigating uncertainty – locally, regionally and globally,” he said in his opening speech at the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) International Accountants Conference 2025 here today.

MIA is the national body responsible for the regulation and development of the accountancy profession, functioning under the purview of the Ministry of Finance.

He note that MIA works closely with stakeholders from various sectors to advocate for sustainability,  safeguard the public interest, ensure the profession’s future relevance, and support Malaysia’s transition to a greener economy.

At the end of 2022, MIA introduced the MIA Sustainability Agenda and launched the MIA Sustainability Blueprint for the Accountancy Profession at the MIA Conference 2024.

In January 2025, the MIA Council approved the MIA Sustainability Roadmap to implement the blueprint, which outlines 169 initiatives over a five-year period and involves 16 committees.

These initiatives include facilitating the implementation of the National Sustainability Reporting Framework through capacity building, promoting technology adoption for sustainability reporting, and implementing ISSA 5000 for sustainability assurance.

Launched by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, MIA International Accountants Conference 2025 coincides with the ASEAN Summit 2025.

The conference, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) on May 26 and 27, themed “Collaborative Leadership for a Sustainable Future".

This year, the conference has attracted close to 3,800 delegates attending both physically and virtually.
