Petronas To Use AI To Support Upstream Operations

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is planning to use artificial intelligence (AI) to support its upstream operations, especially in oil and gas production, said its president and group chief executive officer, Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik.

He said the use of AI could accelerate processes and enable specific outcome solutions.

“For our upstream operations, we want to improve their time to drilling completion, development, discovery and delivery of the first gas or oil,” he said during a dialogue session titled ‘Delivering Asia’s Energy Transition’ at Energy Asia 2025 today.

Tengku Muhammad Taufik stated that Petronas is still in the early stages of AI integration and is actively learning from other service providers, particularly in areas such as methane exploration.

He stated that AI would also help Petronas become more consumer-oriented, offering the services and products that customers desire.

“We will have to choose very carefully what tools and where they are deployed,” he said.

Earlier, Tengku Muhammad Taufik stated that the world is at the threshold of the fifth industrial revolution, and AI is rapidly becoming an indispensable foundational technology across sectors.
