Phnom Penh-Penang Direct Flight To Boost ASEAN Trade - MAHB

GEORGE TOWN, June 30 (Bernama) -- Cambodia Airways’ new direct flight from Phnom Penh to Penang aligns with the ASEAN Connectivity Master Plan 2025, reinforcing Malaysia’s commitment to deeper regional integration.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the route opens new pathways for trade and cross-border collaboration, positioning Penang as a vital node in the ASEAN economic network.

“As the second new airline to commence operations at Penang International Airport this year, following Sichuan Airlines, Cambodia Airways’ entry strengthens Penang’s position as a key northern gateway and enhances our strategic role in advancing regional air connectivity,” he said in a statement today.

On June 26, Penang International Airport welcomed Cambodia Airways as its 18th foreign airline, marking the launch of the first direct service between Phnom Penh and Penang.

The twice-weekly service, operating on Thursdays and Sundays with an Airbus A320 aircraft, is Cambodia Airways’ second international route to Malaysia, complementing its existing Phnom Penh–Kuala Lumpur service.

Beyond Cambodia, Penang already offers direct flights to key ASEAN countries including Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and Myanmar, cementing its status as an emerging hub for regional commerce and tourism, and reflecting the state's continued efforts to expand its network and enhance passenger connectivity ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.

According to MAHB, Penang International Airport recorded 3.4 million passengers from January to May 2025, a 12 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Of this total, 53 per cent were international passengers and 47 per cent were domestic.
