SIRIM To Issue Certificate Of Approval For Waste Plastic Imports Effective July 1

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 (Bernama) -- SIRIM Bhd has been mandated to be the sole inspection body and certificate of approval (COA) issuer for waste plastic imports into Malaysia, effective July 1, 2025.

In a statement today, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) said that, in promoting green growth and climate resilience under the MADANI Economy framework, Malaysia has stepped up efforts to better regulate the import of waste plastic into the country.

“Guided by the principles of transparency, good governance and rule of law, Malaysia is open to issuing COA for the import of waste plastic provided the importers fulfil all conditions under the Malaysian laws, and the exporters belong to or originate from countries that have signed and ratified the Basel Convention,” it said.

The ministry said that Malaysia will not hesitate to act firmly against any individual or company that attempts to circumvent waste import controls or engage in illicit waste import activities.

“MITI remains committed to facilitating a legitimate, responsible and eco-friendly trade environment to support Malaysia’s sustainable socio-economic goals, while aligning with international best practices and multilaterally agreed global commitments on safeguarding the environment,” it added.

Importers wishing to import waste plastic into the country may refer to SIRIM’s guidelines for the importation and inspection of waste plastic, which is available at this address: https://www.sirim-qas.com.my/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/faq-importation-of-waste-plastic-1.pdf.

SIRIM, an agency under MITI, is a well-established industrial research and technology organisation and the national champion of quality in Malaysia.
