Guangxi Solidifies Its Sweet Spot As China’s "National Sugar Barn"

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, with abundant sunshine and rainfall, continues to dominate China’s sugar sector, producing over 6.4 million tonnes of sugar during the 2024/2025 crushing season—accounting for 60 per cent of the nation’s total output for the 20th consecutive year.

The region’s sugarcane planting area has reached 11.35 million mu (approximately 756,667 hectares), up 110,000 mu year-on-year. This growth further reinforces Guangxi’s nickname as China’s “National Sugar Barn”.

At the centre of this surge is Guangxi Sungain Sugar Industry Group Co Ltd, which boosted its daily processing capacity this season. Relying on the “Eucalyptus Out, Sugarcane In” strategy and full-process mechanised planting, the group is advancing its “Second Entrepreneurship and Second Development” blueprint to build a new benchmark for green, efficient, and clustered diversified industrialisation.

It fully drives the sustainable economic and social development of the local area and injects impetus into further consolidating Guangxi’s leading strategic position in China’s sugar industry, according to a statement.

Guangxi’s sugar industry has also evolved beyond traditional refining. The region has embraced intelligent processing, year-round production, and new growth areas such as bagasse power generation and deep processing of sugarcane by-products, adding value and resilience to the supply chain.

Now a pillar of rural revitalisation and economic development, Guangxi’s sugar industry not only ensures domestic supply and price stability but also strengthens export competitiveness—showcasing how technology, scale, and green development can redefine an entire agricultural sector.
