BUSAN, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia had fruitful bilateral engagements with several APEC members on the sidelines of the 15th APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting (EMM), exchanging information and exploring future collaboration in various energy areas.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said discussions were held with New Zealand, which shared its expertise in geothermal energy and expressed interest in liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification.
“We also met with industry players from the United States and South Korea who offered their expertise and technology in nuclear, showing willingness to work together and support Malaysia.
"We have to identify the best technologies, but we are open to working with all APEC countries and determine what suits Malaysia, not only in terms of technology, but also in developing human capital, expertise, and financing perspectives,” he told the media on the sidelines of the APEC EMM15 today.
Fadillah is on an official working visit in Busan until Aug 29 in conjunction with the 15th EMM.
On nuclear energy, Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said discussions also touched on waste management. “We raised the issue of whether technology providers are willing to take back the waste while supplying us with the technology. For small countries like Malaysia, waste management is a big concern," he added.
Malaysia held bilateral meetings with, among others, Hong Kong, China Secretary of Energy Chin Wan Tse; Brunei Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Major General (Retired) Dato Paduka Seri Halbi Mohammad Yussof; and South Korea Minister of Trade, Industry and Economy Jung-Kwan Kim.
The bilateral meetings covered a wide range of issues in the energy sector, including cooperation in energy and on hydrogen technology, the development of nuclear power for electricity generation, enhancing regional interconnections under the ASEAN Power Grid, waste-to-energy, and energy efficiency initiatives.
