Sarawak Electricity Ordinance Amendment Unlocks Potential For New Generation Projects
KUCHING, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- The recent amendment to the Sarawak Electricity Ordinance marked a major turning point for the state’s energy sector, said State Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.
He said the amendment introduces clearer, more streamlined procedures and attractive incentives, creating regulatory certainty that appeals to independent power producers, and encourages private sector investment.
“With these changes, we are unlocking the potential for new generation projects, including renewables and hybrid solutions to come online more swiftly and transparently, contributing to a more dynamic energy market.
“By fostering an environment that encourages innovation, accelerates project delivery and welcomes private sector participation, we are strengthening the backbone of our economy – a reliable, sustainable and affordable energy supply,” he said during the opening ceremony of the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 4.0), which was officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today.
Julaihi said this strong energy foundation is vital for driving industrial growth, attracting foreign investment and ultimately improving the quality of life for all Sarawakians.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s continued commitment to rural electrification and grid expansion, noting that every project plays a critical role in building economic resilience and sustainable growth.
“We are not only building for today but laying a strong foundation for the future, and we look forward to sharing our progress with our regional neighbours,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy chairman Datuk Ibrahim Baki said Sarawak is driving regional collaboration through the Borneo Grid, with hydropower projects on track to extend beyond state borders, connecting Sabah, Kalimantan, and Brunei.
“We are also setting the stage to realise a truly interconnected ASEAN Power Grid, powered by renewables. By sharing clean energy, we can grow our economies while reducing carbon emissions together,” he said.
He added that SAREF 4.0 is part of the official programme for Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, underscoring Sarawak’s pivotal role in advancing regional cooperation.
