Malaysia-India Semiconductor Collaboration In Focus Ahead Of Modi’s Visit - Liew

By Nurunnasihah Ahmad Rashid

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and India are exploring closer collaboration in the semiconductor sector, with possible announcements expected during the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Malaysia next month.

Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Deputy Minister Liew Chin Tong, who met with India's Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, for a bilateral meeting at midday, said the discussion also focused on strengthening collaboration between Malaysia and India.

“There is a lot of potential for Malaysia and India to collaborate on semiconductors,” he told Bernama.

Modi will be among the leaders who will be attending the 47th ASEAN Summit in October, alongside the United States President Donald Trump and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

The bilateral meeting between India and Malaysia was held on the sidelines of the 57th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ (AEM) Meeting and Related Meetings here today, which included the 22nd AEM-India Consultation.

Liew described the discussion with India as “candid and frank”, adding that continued engagement would help both sides reach a consensus.

The Malaysia-India bilateral trade reached US$20.01 billion in 2023-2024.

Malaysia is India’s 16th largest trading partner and ranks as the country’s third largest trading partner in ASEAN, while India ranks among Malaysia’s top 10.
