SUSE Unveils First Enterprise Linux With Built-In Agentic AI

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- SUSE, a global leader in enterprise open-source solutions, has unveiled SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 16, the industry’s first enterprise Linux integrated with agentic artificial intelligence (AI), setting a new benchmark for intelligent automation, security, and lifecycle management in critical information technology (IT) infrastructure.

This release provides deeper visibility, insights and automated management to streamline operations, reduce operational costs and time troubleshooting and create a faster time to market for mission-critical applications.

“Using AI with SLES 16, IT leaders can drive operational efficiency without having to hire new teams or build a custom toolchain. SUSE is the first to deliver a built-in, open and extensible AI infrastructure directly within an enterprise operating system (OS).

“This, combined with our historic commitment to security and compliance and an industry-leading 16-year lifecycle, makes SLES 16 the first enterprise Linux that solves for both immediate innovation and long-term stability,” said SUSE General Manager of Business Critical Linux, Rick Spencer in a statement.

The new release embeds agentic AI using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), giving enterprises a secure and extensible way to connect AI models with external tools and data sources, all without locking into a single AI ecosystem.

SLES 16 introduces AI-powered administration through the Cockpit web console and command line, enabling automated monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance optimisation. The OS can bridge to any large language model (LLM) provider, supporting flexibility in AI deployment.

Among its standout features, SLES 16 offers one of the longest support lifecycles in the industry—16 years, making it post-2038 ready. It also introduces instant rollback for near-immediate system recovery and reproducible builds that allow enterprises to independently verify and rebuild their Linux distribution from source, enhancing transparency and security.

The release further includes SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 16, optimised for SAP HANA and S/4HANA workloads; SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 16 for automated failover; and SUSE Linux Micro 6.2, designed for resilient edge and embedded deployments.

SLES 16 will be generally available from Nov 4, offering what SUSE calls a “future-ready Linux” that unites AI-driven intelligence with enterprise-grade reliability.
