Proposal To Allow EPF Members To Buy Base MHIT Products Via Akaun Sejahtera Being Studied - MoF

KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- The proposal to allow i-Lindung withdrawals from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Akaun Sejahtera (Account 2) for base medical and health insurance/takaful (MHIT) purchase is currently being studied, the Finance Ministry (MoF) said.

Withdrawals would be voluntary and limited to accounts specifically allocated for health and protection purposes, it said.

The ministry said the approach ensures a balance between the need for health protection and the security of retirement savings.

“Savings in Akaun Persaraan (Account 1) will not be affected. Savings in Akaun Sejahtera have already been available to help members meet medium-term needs such as medical, education, housing withdrawals and other permitted purposes, subject to the terms and conditions set,” it said in a written reply published on the Parliament’s website today.

The MoF said this in response to a query from Senator Datuk Rosni Sohar regarding the ministry’s assessment of the capability of the basic MHIT plan in improving public protection and the implications of the proposed use of EPF savings on the security of contributors’ retirement funds.

According to the MoF, the EPF is currently improving the i-Lindung facility so that it s coverage can include the new base MHIT products.

At present, the i-Lindung facility offers the Member Protection Facility (FPA) products for life and critical illness protection.

The MoF said the government will continue implementing reforms in stages, in collaboration with all parties, to build a stronger and more sustainable healthcare system.

“The government will also continue to monitor the implementation of this plan to ensure the interest of the people are always protected,” it said.

Under the RESET strategy, the basic MHIT announced by the government on Jan 22, 2026, is an important step to expand access to continuous health insurance and takaful protection while strengthening the healthcare ecosystem for the benefit of the people.
