Petronas Takes Delivery Of One Million Barrels Of Iraqi Crude Via Ocean Thunder
KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (Bernama) -- Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) on Saturday confirmed that the vessel Ocean Thunder has arrived in Malaysia, transporting one million barrels of crude oil originating from Basrah, Iraq.
The national oil and gas company stated that this shipment is part of Petronas’ ongoing efforts to maintain the stability of the nation’s fuel supply.
“Ocean Thunder carries a portion of the 38 per cent of national crude oil imports transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” it said in an update on its official Instagram account.
According to the post, Malaysia's fuel supply is drawn from multiple sources across Petronas's wider supply network.
This allows Petronas to confirm that the fuel supply across its stations nationwide is sufficient through the end of June 2026, it said.
Meanwhile, one million barrels of crude oil from Basrah can produce about 159 million litres of petroleum products, including between 62 million and 64 million litres of diesel, between 45 million and 48 million litres of petrol, between 22 million and 24 million litres of aviation fuel, between five million and six million litres of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and other products amounting to between 18 million and 25 million litres.
According to Wood Mackenzie (2025), Malaysia consumes an average of around 112 million litres of fuel per day, comprising about 34 million litres of diesel, 46 million litres of petrol, 12 million litres of aviation fuel, and 20 million litres of LPG.
