Alibaba Cloud Launches Johor Public Cloud Region To Meet Growing Demand

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 (Bernama) – Alibaba Cloud Intelligence has launched its new public cloud region in Johor, expanding its data centre footprint in Malaysia as it seeks to meet the growing demand for cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) services.

Alibaba Cloud Malaysia general manager Choong Hon Keat said the Johor public cloud region is the company’s second cloud region in Malaysia and forms part of its continued investment commitment to the country.

“(The launch) emphasises our continuous commitment and investments in support of Malaysia’s digital economy, especially in this AI era,” he said during a media briefing in Kuala Lumpur today.

Choong said the launch brings Alibaba Cloud’s total infrastructure footprint in Malaysia to five data centres, marking the company’s largest presence in Southeast Asia.

According to him, the Johor region, together with the Kuala Lumpur region, will provide customers with more resilient, low-latency services and improved cloud performance.

He added that the new facility is primarily aimed at meeting demand from Malaysian customers, although it will also be accessible to users from neighbouring countries, including Singapore.

In a statement, Alibaba Cloud said the new Johor facilities were established to address growing demand for cloud and AI services in Malaysia and form part of Alibaba Group’s US$53 billion (US$1=RM4.07) investment in AI and cloud infrastructure.

The expansion increases Alibaba Cloud’s global infrastructure network to 104 availability zones across 32 regions.

Meanwhile, Choong said Alibaba Cloud has seen increasing AI adoption in Malaysia and continues to support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through various initiatives and collaborations with government agencies.

He said Alibaba Cloud continues to work closely with agencies such as the Digital Ministry and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to support AI adoption among MSMEs.

“We do see that AI adoption has been increasing tremendously with the government also driving the initiatives.

“We will be continuously working with the relevant agencies in supporting MSMEs in their AI adoption and bringing our solutions to them,” he added.
