SIBU, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Contingent of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) held its final Pingat Jasa Pahlawan Negara (PJPN) service medals award ceremony today, where 203 retired or former police officers were honoured at the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall, Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS).

Topping the list of recipients was former ACP Fauzi Saadi Diol, 73, who previously commanded the 12th Battalion of the General Operations Force in Miri.

In a media release, Sarawak Police Commissioner CP Datuk Mancha Ata said 121 retirees or former officers personally received their medals, while 82 were represented by their next of kin.

“This PJPN Series 5/2024 marks the last formal ceremony to present these medals. Since 2014, Sarawak PDRM has organised 17 ceremonial PJPN award ceremonies and five informal presentations, awarding a total of 2,517 individuals,” he said.

Mancha Ata also said that 1,218 eligible retirees or former Sarawak police officers are still awaiting their PJPN honours.

“Some were unable to attend the ceremony due to health or other limitations. These remaining medals will be distributed informally,” he said.

He said Sarawak PDRM will authorise district police chiefs to present the medals at their respective district police headquarters or deliver them directly to the recipients' homes.

The PJPN is awarded to PDRM personnel in recognition of their bravery, sacrifices and service to the nation during the Malayan Emergency from July 12, 1948 to July 21,1960.

The medal also recognises police service during the communist insurgency in Peninsular Malaysia between 17 June 1968 and 2 December 1989, as well as in Sabah and Sarawak from 1962 to Oct 17, 1990, in recognition of their service during the emergency periods.
