RM5.8 Billion Allocation Crucial Step To Strengthen ATM - Defence Force Chief

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) — The allocation of RM5.8 billion, for the acquisition of strategic assets, as well as maintenance and repair work, is seen as a crucial step in strengthening the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), said Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman.

He emphasised that this initiative aligns with the objective of transforming ATM into an integrated, agile, and focused future force.

“In the face of global geopolitical uncertainties, our commitment to national defence must remain a priority.

“Moreover, the special emphasis on developing the local defence industry, in line with current innovations and technologies, is highly welcome,” he told Bernama.

During the presentation of Budget 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a total allocation of RM21.2 billion for the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), which includes RM5.8 billion earmarked for maintenance, repair works, and the acquisition of new military assets.

Commenting further, Mohammad said that the increase in allocations for MINDEF will positively impact the well-being of ATM personnel.

“Enhancements, such as improving learning environments in military camp schools, increasing internet access, maintaining and repairing the Armed Forces Family Housing (RKAT) units, and improving the Ex-Gratia Work Disaster Scheme, will significantly enhance the quality of life for members and their families,” he said.

Regarding the welfare of ATM veterans, Mohammad highlighted initiatives such as the PROTEGE - Veterans programme, the increase in the cost of living allowance for non-pensionable ATM veterans, the extension of special appreciation payments, and pension adjustments under the Public Service Remuneration System, all of which demonstrate the government’s commitment to the well-being of military veterans and pensioners.

“ATM is determined to leverage this provision effectively, to enhance its capacity and preparedness for future challenges,” he added.
