Power Grid In Cuba Completely Collapses

MEXICO CITY, Oct 19 (Bernama-dpa) -- The entire power grid of Cuba collapsed on Friday, with the Ministry of Energy of the socialist Caribbean nation announcing that, unexpectedly, the important Antonio Guiteras thermal power plant had gone offline, reported German news agency (dpa). 

They stated that this led to a general power outage in the country. 

Several other power plants were already out of operation due to their poor condition.

Cuba is experiencing one of the most severe economic crises since the revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959. 

Due to the poor condition of the outdated infrastructure — a consequence of the US trade embargo that has been in place for more than 60 years — thermal power plants in Cuba regularly go offline and require emergency repairs. 

Power outages are a common occurrence across the country.
