JAKARTA, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono has travelled to Kazan, Russia, to attend the two-day BRICS Plus 2024 Summit from Oct 23 to 24, just one day after his appointment.
Serving as the special envoy of President Prabowo Subianto, this marks Sugiono’s first official trip in his new role, according to a statement from the ministry on Tuesday.
His presence at the summit underscores Indonesia’s commitment to actively participate in international forums and strengthen relations with all countries, including BRICS-member states.
“At the BRICS Plus Summit, Indonesia will convey a crucial message of peace, emphasising the importance of emerging countries and the Global South uniting to enhance solidarity and play a vital role in creating a more inclusive, just, and equitable world order,” said the statement.
Sugiono, 45, is also scheduled to engage in several bilateral meetings with other countries to discuss various regional and global issues.
This year’s BRICS summit held under the theme, “BRICS and Global South: Joint Building of a Better World”, has invited BRICS members, non-member states, and international organisations such as Commonwealth of Independent States, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and Eurasian Economic Commission.
The intergovernmental organisation, established by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to address current global issues, has recently expanded to include the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, bringing its membership to nine.
