04/11/2024 03:45 PM

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (ICBES) 2024 kicked off today and runs until Thursday (Nov 7).

The event is a unique platform for enthusiasts, conservationists, exhibitors and suppliers to share their passion for butterflies, conservation and the natural world while protecting wild butterflies.

It brings together nearly 100 experts, exhibitors and suppliers from 20 countries -- the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Türkiye, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Kenya, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said ICBES opens up opportunities for participants not only in knowledge sharing, collaboration and innovation but also as a platform to discuss pressing issues facing butterfly conservation today and to exchange ideas that will contribute to a sustainable and impactful future for this field.

“Butterflies are much more than delicate creatures that capture our imagination; they are vital indicators of the health of our ecosystems. Their presence, or absence, can tell us a great deal about the state of the environment," he said when speaking at the opening of ICBES 2024 here today.

“As we face the growing challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, the work you all do, whether through exhibits, research or conservation programmes, becomes ever more vital. Efforts ensure that future generations will not only experience the beauty of butterflies but also understand the role they play in maintaining the ecological balance.”

Also present at the event were International Association of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (IABES) president Kimberly Kelly and Entopia chief executive officer Joseph Goh.

Wong pointed out that Penang boasts an incredible range of biodiversity, from the greenery of Penang Hill to the pristine wildlife in the National Park, and hosting international conservation-focused events will indirectly raise global awareness of these ecosystems and position itself as a leader in eco-conscious tourism.

Meanwhile, Kimberly said ICBES represents a global community of individuals and organisations dedicated to the preservation and celebration of butterflies and their ecosystems.

“The work we do whether through education, breeding or exhibits plays a crucial role in ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate the beauty and importance of butterflies,” she said.

Goh said for many years, Entopia has strived to inspire the public about the importance of nature and thus by hosting ICBES, it has an incredible opportunity to amplify that mission.

“Over the next few days, we will explore new advancements, engage in meaningful discussions and deepen our shared commitment to protecting butterfly species and their habitats. The insights we gain here will shape the future of our industry and contribute to the preservation of biodiversity on a global scale," he said.

This year marks the third time Penang has hosted ICBES, following successful conferences in 2000 and 2009.
