BANGI, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's recommendation for Israel to be expelled from the United Nations (UN) if it violates the law on issues involving Palestine is a moral and ethical step, said former Foreign Minister Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Albar.
He said this was because Israel did not respect international law and any rules in international conventions as followed by member states.
"...I do not know if it is possible but it is the right decision, because Israel opposes the UN and should not be a member of the UN.
"Israel does not respect the UN’s charter law, violates international law, violates the Geneva Conventions. why until now there has been no action against Israel," he told reporters after delivering the 6th Lecture by Chancellor Tuanku Muhriz at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia here today.
This was in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement yesterday in the Dewan Rakyat on Malaysia which had prepared a draft resolution of the UN General Assembly which, among other things, proposed that Israel be removed as a member of the organisation in the event of a violation of laws, actions and decisions on issues involving Palestine.
Anwar said the draft resolution was under negotiation and was expected to be tabled at the UN General Assembly for approval in the near future.
Israel was granted full membership in the United Nations on May 11, 1949.
