KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- The 4th Malaysian Lifestyle Medicine Conference, themed ‘Diabetes Management Revolution: From Prevention to Remission,’ is scheduled to be held at a hotel here from Nov 21 to 23.

Organised by the Malaysian Society of Lifestyle Medicine (MSLM), this hybrid event will focus on innovative approaches in lifestyle medicine for preventing, managing and even reversing Type 2 diabetes.

MSLM founder and president Dr Siva Poobalasingam said this year’s conference would bring together international and local experts to discuss intensive, evidence-based lifestyle medicine interventions that can not only prevent but also potentially bring Type 2 diabetes into remission.

“Malaysia’s initiative in the Lifestyle Medicine for Remission of Diabetes programme is now highlighted on the World Health Organisation (WHO) website, which marks a significant milestone for the country,” he said in a statement made available to Bernama.

He added that the event would feature lectures, workshops and forums aimed at empowering healthcare professionals with practical strategies to help patients combat diabetes.

The conference follows Malaysia’s pioneering efforts in integrating lifestyle medicine into the public health sector, with the WHO-MOH Lifestyle Medicine for Remission of Diabetes pilot project that has achieved encouraging outcomes.

During the Global Lifestyle Medicine Leadership Summit at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) in Feb 2024, Dr Siva, who was recently appointed as the Chair of the Advisory Board for the Lifestyle Medicine Global Alliance and the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine, presented Malaysia’s success in adopting lifestyle medicine for diabetes remission.

“Our work in Malaysia was highly praised by global lifestyle medicine leaders,” he shared, underscoring the international recognition Malaysia has earned for this public healthcare advancement.

As Malaysia continues to contribute to the Civil 20 (C20) discussions, MSLM’s involvement will focus on advancing proposals on lifestyle medicine and diabetes remission to the G20 leaders.

Healthcare professionals, including physicians and allied health workers, are encouraged to attend the conference to gain insights from leading experts on topics ranging from plant-based diets to stress management.

The event also presents a valuable networking opportunity for those committed to transformative healthcare practices.

The conference will be followed by the Board Certification Examination in Lifestyle Medicine, conducted by the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine.
