GEORGE TOWN, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- The contribution of a high-performance computer sets and smart televisions to public universities is very beneficial to students, especially in the development of digitalisation which requires sophisticated devices.

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed said the contribution received from the Communications Ministry through the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) can be used for teaching and learning purposes in the classroom by students and lecturers.

“USM thanks Bernama for the donation of high-performance computer sets and smart televisions, as these can be used for teaching and learning purposes in the classroom for students,” he said while speaking at the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2024 northern zone campus tour at USM today.

"In this digital age, it is very beneficial for students to collectively use that high-performance computer sets."

Previously, the Communications Ministry via Bernama as the implementing agency, presented a donation of high-performance computer sets and 65-inch televisions to the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at USM, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis. (UNIMAP).

The contribution was presented by the Bernama chief executive officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, who is also the HAWANA 2024 Working Committee chairman, at an event also attended by the Bernama editor-in-chief and HAWANA 2024 project director Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahman said that the organisation of the HAWANA 2024 northern zone campus tour not only elevates the field of journalism as an important branch in national development but also provides knowledge to aspiring journalists.

He said it is an honour for USM to be chosen as the host for the programme for the northern zone and it provides many new facts and knowledge to the university students.

"I am grateful today that we can gather together in this programme and take the opportunity to express our thanks to Bernama for inviting USM through the School of Communication as a strategic partner and co-coordinator with HAWANA 2024 for the northern zone,” he also said.

"Not to be forgotten, my appreciation goes to the Ministry of Communications for organising programmes like this, which USM warmly welcomes as it has elevated the field of journalism as an important branch in the development of the country."

In the meantime, USM School of Communication dean, Associate Professor Dr. Bahiyah Omar said that the content provided in the programme was very beneficial to communication students, especially in facing the field of journalism in the future.

She said that through the sharing conducted in the programme, it could provide knowledge and information to the USM Communication Studies Centre to improve the journalism programme there.

"We see that the sharing aspect conducted during the programme is also very beneficial and important for journalism students; this is an added value, especially in the digital field, so that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to face today's digital challenges," she said.

Also sharing the same view was the chairperson of the programme committee for the USM School of Communication, Associate Professor Dr. Nik Norma Nik Hassan.

"The programme provides direct exposure from the industry to our students who are very eager for new knowledge in journalism. They previously only learned in the classroom, and today they can engage face-to-face with the industry," she said, adding that her team greatly appreciated this opportunity.

According to Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP) lecturer Luqhman Hakim Dahlan Tabah, the programme will provide a boost to UNIMAP students while simultaneously producing graduates equipped with knowledge in the various fields they pursue.

"We see this programme as an added value because they (students) are exposed to the industry (journalism) and they can see for themselves how the process works, so it is new knowledge as it provides a clearer picture of what they learn in the university, whether it is used or not, and so on," he added.
