IoT Security An Essential Requirement, Not Optional - MyIoT

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) – Many companies focus on advanced technology but often neglect security, especially during the early stages of concept or beta testing.

Malaysia Internet-of-Things Association (MyIoT) treasurer, Pathmanathan Muniandy, highlighted that security is often overlooked in the development of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

Typically, priority is on the technology's ability to collect and process data, rather than safeguarding that data.

"For instance, the cyberattack on Ring security cameras (owned by Amazon) reveals the significant risks when security is not prioritised, raising global concerns about user privacy and safety," he said in a statement to Bernama.

Pathmanathan stressed that IoT security must be integrated from the beginning of development, with essential measures including the use of encryption technologies like AES128 or AES256 to secure transmitted data, with regular updating of security keys.

"Every IoT device must be equipped with a robust security system. All server connections should be routed through secure ports with valid security certificates," he emphasised.

He recommended using services like Cloudflare to defend against cyberattacks, such as Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, ensuring the system remains operational.

Pathmanathan also called for adherence to international security standards, such as ISO 27001, to guarantee that IoT infrastructure is both secure and reliable.

“We are working with global security experts to assist both local and international companies in safeguarding data to the highest standards,” he explained.

He further highlighted that efforts are underway to strengthen IoT security in Malaysia, including operating systems and databases.

Pathmanathan stressed that IoT security is not only about protecting personal data but also maintaining user trust.

“In today’s increasingly challenging cyber environment, IoT security is not optional—it’s an essential requirement that cannot be ignored," he concluded.
