ISTANBUL, Dec 22 (Bernama-AA) -- United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump appointed British television producer Mark Burnett, best known for creating The Apprentice, as special envoy to the United Kingdom (UK) on Saturday, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported.
The announcement was made on Trump's social media platform, Truth Social, where he praised Burnett's ‘distinguished career in television production and business’ and called the appointment a ‘great honour.’
"Mark will work to enhance diplomatic relations, focusing on areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment opportunities, and cultural exchanges," said Trump.
He lauded Burnett's achievements, including 13 Emmy Awards and his role in producing hit shows like Survivor and Shark Tank.
Burnett, 64, rose to prominence in Hollywood as a pioneer in reality television and played a significant role in boosting Trump’s public profile with The Apprentice.
In his new role, Burnett will serve as a negotiator and advisor on key US-UK initiatives, distinct from the duties of Warren Stephens, Trump's nominee for US ambassador to the UK.
"I am truly honoured to serve the United States of America and President Trump as his Special Envoy to the United Kingdom," Burnett said via a spokesperson.
The appointment comes at a pivotal time for Burnett, who exited his role at MGM Television in 2022 after Amazon acquired the studio. His transition to diplomacy signals a unique blend of entertainment and international relations in the imminent Trump administration.
While Burnett’s ties to Trump have drawn attention over the years, including calls to release outtakes from The Apprentice amid past controversies, his appointment marks a renewed partnership with the president-elect.
Critics and supporters are watching closely as Burnett steps into his diplomatic role.
