KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 4 (Bernama) -- Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) opened the 2025 Malaysia Hockey League (LHM) premier competition campaign in style when they clinched the Charity Shield (Piala Sumbangsih) after defeating defending champions Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) 2-1 here, tonight.

In action at Field 2 of the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil here, tonight. South Korean national player Jang Jong Hyun puts TNB in front after converting a penalty flix in the 27th minute, but THT quickly equalised through a penalty corner by Faizal Saari in the 30th minute.

THT's winning goal came in the third quarter of the match when Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Abdul Jalil had no trouble converting a penalty corner in the 42nd minute, thus confirming the team's success.

The victory cured THT's disappointment of succumbing to the same opponent in the last edition which saw TNB thwart the squad from the East Coast to win the Charity Shield for the third time in a row.

THT head coach Mohd Harfizi Baharom said his men had successfully fulfilled their promise to achieve success without dragging the match into extra time and a penalty shootout.

“Today’s players have really set their mind to win this game without penalty shootout, to win convincingly today.

“If we look at our outing, there were several shortcomings which would be touched up in the training session, especially in terms of the combination of our players and imported players, so we have to get that combination as soon as possible,” he said when met after the match here.

For the record, THT stopped the consecutive victories of TNB, who emerged as the treble champions in the last edition.

Mohd Harfizi said all these shortcomings, especially in terms of the combination between the players, will be improved further to face the league competition after this.

Earlier, the Women's Charity Shield clash saw the Blue Warriors clinch the championship after defeating defending champions Malaysian University 1-0 with national player Hanis Nadiah Onn emerging as the heroine when she scored the winning goal in the 16th minute.
