PUTRAJAYA, Jan 9 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has been chosen as one of the departments under the Home Ministry to pioneer the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in its operations.

Its director-general Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the adoption of AI technology would not only enhance operational efficiency but also encourage the use of modern technology to safeguard national well-being.

"AI is a new approach that must be given attention by all MMEA personnel, particularly the agency’s senior management.

"This is because AI will serve as a catalyst for operational reform within the MMEA," he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Mohd Rosli said that the MMEA has been allocated RM400 million this year for the repair and maintenance of maritime and aerial assets.

He also emphasised the importance of strategic partnerships with foreign enforcement agencies, including those in Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore, as well as the United States Coast Guard and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

"Close cooperation is crucial for strengthening the security of the country’s waters against various transnational threats, including sharing information on attempts by illegal immigrants to enter the country," he said.
